Comments:

Drawing. Mapping of male figure re: ‘Contour Lines’ exercise —for edges manipulation, values, etc. I still need to look at the basic theory on this. I used the below image from Watts Atelier for this exercise. My mapping of the figure is also shown below.

Comments OCT/26:

Very little progress made today, I was very tired.

Comments:

Progress was made today. I have to say it is mostly "intuitive" (I haven't quite got it); have no much theory aside from the one on video which is still sinking in —I am waiting for some books I ordered for better understanding of the subject, from a theoretical point of view. But I would say it is okay for the first human figure drawing ever (I loved figure drawing in fact). (Cont...)

Comments:

(Cont.) I was quite apprehensive about it before I started but the 'mapping' process was surprisingly ‘quick’; it probably took me longer to "get" the edges and values… (Sort of) as again, I was mainly following the figure provided (more data is needed!). Anyway, this exercise was nothing to do with figure drawing but grasping the concept of “Contour Lines”— figure comes much later. It was very enjoyable indeed.

Update NOV/08: this exercise requires corrections — I am doing some study before that.

Update NOV/09: okay, I know what I am doing wrong re: Contour Lines, and actually, it’s simple — it comes down to defining words. Today I watched the lesson in a new unit of time and hey hey hey, hurray . . . it was all there. I was careless listening (and observing) —plus I need to learn the nomenclature (shapes, planes, EDGES, values, shade recognition, etc.). I am much happier, no wonder.

Note: That Bruce Springsteen’s song from the eighties (all of them really); that communication, that energy, that beauty... so inspiring. What an artist.

Update NOV/10: I have been studying “The Practice and Science of Drawing” by Harold Speed and I am finding it essential — the importance of line drawing.

Update NOV/11: I am continuing to study the above book by Harold Speed and it actually is a joy to find this data... the author is talking about conventional & academic learning and expression of art; drawing & art (the book goes into detail on why not all drawing is necessarily art) and what makes a drawing (or any art for this matter) an expression of art…

I also started reading a book that I have had for years but so oddly enough, I never got to read it! "ART" by R. Hubbard. I read on the Basics of Art — a total eye opening on the things that matter to the artist and to the receiver or beholder of the art.

Note: I want the website to be accessible to other-language speaking viewers, so I tried adding a translation widget but it just distorted everything - specially the drawings, so I deleted it. I need to find an alternative to this.

Update NOV/15/2015: I have been studying the above books and it is time to start doing some art.

"Expert use of the fundamentals is the only basis there is for learning to draw. These fundamentals can be listed, studied, and carried out in your own way. They are proportion, anatomy, perspective, values, colour, and knowledge of mediums and materials. Each of these can be the subject of infinite study and observation. If there is a secret, it is only in your individual expression." —Andrew Loomis, from “Figure Drawing for all it’s Worth”.
