Comments:

Well, I decided that the submission is completed—you can always do more but the main thing is ‘resolved’. Considering that I drew this skull more than a year ago (life happened intensely this year, including dad’s passing) I see two main problems with this submission:

1) The proportion of the teeth was way too big so as a result I got a tiny chin, but that’s okay — lesson is learnt. 2) On the other hand, I have a “values” problem—and the pencil is a bit rough; I began working too dark and so it was hard to soften it later; this I can’t say “lesson learnt” because I tend to work on high value tones so this problem is going to take some work to tackle. Happy to be back on track, anyway! (This session included 1 hour of skull sketches).

Another thing I decided to keep-in going forward with the training is... SIMPLICITY. This work has to be kept simple and productive—exercise resolved means exercise completed. I didn’t spend all this long on the ¾ skull but I actually did 16 days in a row of skull drawing and that definitively raised my confront to get this submission completed, this is a piece of key data (hope to carry on with the same practice for the next 11 skulls pending for submission).  Skull drawing is a bit tedious until you actually get to control it (just like everything else). Today I began changing skull positions on the drawings—that’s going to be the next challenge. This thread was way too long but it was the log book of 'life'—and drawing happening or not as a result.  Day 16 of #30 DAY PRACTICE.

“Perfection is a work that is resolved, not one that is polished.”—Rod Jodkins.

Today I just did warm up exercises.

Note: Between the 13th and 19th June no art work was done. I spent most of the time reading, studying and organizing. (On the 15th I was away in Douglas).

I made some changes to my work schedule but have not been fully implemented yet.

Comments:

Today I have started to map the shadows on the skull. The ¾ view exercise consists once again on: “Focus on clean line work and accuracy.”

On the other hand, today I’ve started trying a new routine in order to implement better my art sessions — I’m aiming for two daily sessions but if for this week I manage a good 2-3 hour session, I’ll be happy with it as a start point.

Resuming a long “pause”.

Truth is, this skull series is tough J

Watched Skull ¾ videos after a long time.

Aiming to do a 30-day chain, non-stop — I need to turn out finished jobs every 2-3 days max., this is “reasonable” time with the rest of my daily commitments. Here we go August!

Comments:

Today I did 1 hr practice and as it was expected I lost the accumulated progress so I did a couple of exercises (very scratchy ones) to refresh my memory. Tomorrow hopefully I’ll be able to do a couple of sessions and get back to the original exercise which is in progress. (Note: I need to acquire Jeff’s “basics” video when I get a chance).

Well, as always, it just makes me happy to get back into my arts — it is a testing but fascinating practice.

Today I drew more memory skulls — went back and did one of each profile, front and ¾ view.

I realise need more methodology so tomorrow I’ll get to work on the same but drawing each at least 5 times (should have 15 skulls in total) — I’m going now for memorizing these, plus I’ll do some accompanying theoretical study.

Good practice today (I’m getting excited again). Need a good sleep and tomorrow I’ll be doing a morning session.

I also enrolled on the New Masters Academy Art program — in addition to Watts Atelier to continue with extra training. I began with lesson 1. (Overview); 2 (Basic Shapes of the Face and Skull) and 3. (Sections of the Head) by Steve Huston (this is already postponed, 26/Oct/2017—until I complete my Philosophy training in 2018).

Comments:

It has been such a long time since my last good practice-period that I started reviewing previous lessons and doing quite a bit of basic exercises.

The one realization I had today— just from looking at my exercises—was that I drew so many skulls that somehow I managed to stall. I should have decided sooner to get through the 14 skulls instead of grinding on the first ones. Okay, too much practice can never be wrong but I somehow managed to lose momentum and motivation— driving myself to the ground as well as all the surrounding events. Just did too much of the first exercises obsessing to learn them by heart.

Instead, it would have been more productive recognising to have reached a good point and then having moved forward. Well, that’s another lesson and I am initiating a new practice face this month of October — aiming to complete head face I & II before new year (and whilst training and working).

On purpose. I worked on the things that are troubling for me (mouth, chick bones). Thoroughly enjoyed and have made notes of observations to keep in. Day 1 of #30 DAY PRACTICE.

I love the following quotes that I read today:

“Sooner or later, the great men turn out to be all alike. They never stop working. They never lose a minute. It is very depressing.” —V.S. Pritchett.

“Habit is not mere subjugation, it is a tender tie: when one remembers habit it seems to have been happiness.” —Elizabeth Bowen.” — Arnold Bennett.

“Perfection is a work that is resolved, not one that is polished.”—Rod Jodkins.

Comments:

Great practice today; I worked on about 8-10 skulls okay qual. (front view) and made colour red corrections (first time I do that) and seemed to have worked well. I simply got down to drawing skulls one after another in 10 min with desired shapes (On purpose-practice; correct and move on as fast as I can get them well done and memorized to the best of my ability). Day 2 of #30 DAY PRACTICE.

I worked similarly to yesterdays but I used a couple of additional references... It is time to start getting ready the 3rd submission—I’ll be working on it tomorrow.

One other thing that I notice is that I somehow need to get “Zenned-out” before I get practice started so I have been doing quite a bit of reading before it and I love it (organic developments!). Day 8 of #30 DAY PRACTICE.

I am going to do a couple of sessions today. This morning got a little diluted into too many things but this practice hour is fine; I have resolved most exercises between 3-4 min which feels good. Day 9 of #30 DAY PRACTICE.
